SOBRE COMIXWALL (www.comixwall.org)

The purpose of the ComixWall project is to provide an Internet Security Gateway (ISG) which truly deserves its name (another name would be a firewall with UTM features).

ComixWall is developed on OpenBSD and ports/packages, which are licensed under BSD, GPL, or a similar open source license. ComixWall is, to my knowledge, the first fully open source ISG running on OpenBSD. ComixWall is freely available for all, and it already has most of the advanced features of many commercial and closed-source (some half open source) ISG's.

This is a very serious undertaking, because, again to my knowledge, most of the free and open source firewalls available on the Internet fail to support many of the features available on other commercial and closed-source ISG's, thus, in my opinion, they can be considered as "firewalls" only.

ComixWall aims to keep the tradition of high quality documentation standards one finds in OpenBSD. Therefore, when ComixWall is released, it always has an administration manual, which is again in line with the goal at hand: to be a rival free and open source ISG to the commercial and closed-source ones. In other words, ComixWall is not ready to be released until its documentation is ready.

In short, the goal of this project is to prove everyone that it is possible to create a high quality, free and open source ISG based on OpenBSD, which can not only compete but surpass its commercial and closed-source rivals. (In reality, the use of OpenSSH by Cisco in their security appliances is enough evidence that this was more than a mere possibility.) Even the first public release in September 2007 may have already set an example towards this goal.
